Sculpture Garden Residency Culminates in Immersive Exhibition at Lemon Street Gallery

Lovers Talk, a collaborative exhibition by artist Sara Marlowe Hall and musician Matthew Zuk, opened at Lemon Street Gallery on 14 June, marking the culmination of only the second artist residency held at the Sculpture Garden in Withiel.

The exhibition brought together painting, sound, landscape and memory in an immersive exploration of place and shared experience. Developed through a two-week residency at The Amber Houses in Aegina, Greece, and a subsequent residency at the Sculpture Garden in Cornwall, the project highlighted the growing significance of the residency programme and its role in supporting site-responsive contemporary practice.

Hall and Zuk drew inspiration from both the rural surroundings of Withiel and the coastline of Aegina, creating a body of work that reflected movement between locations, cultures and artistic disciplines. Through painting, music and installation, Lovers Talk explored how memory and atmosphere transcend geographical boundaries, carrying one place into another.

Working within the gardens and gallery spaces at Withiel, Hall responded to seasonal shifts, natural textures and changing light conditions. The resulting paintings and works on paper captured fleeting impressions of landscape and atmosphere, while Zuk’s live guitar performances provided an emotional and spatial counterpart to the visual work.

Together, the artists created an environment that encouraged visitors to engage through listening, looking and movement. Image and sound merged to form a shared language, transforming the gallery into a space where art could be experienced as both a visual and sensory encounter.

The exhibition also demonstrated the potential of the Sculpture Garden residency programme to foster ambitious collaborations and creative exchange. As only the second residency to take place at the venue, Hall and Zuk’s project showcased how Cornwall’s unique landscape can inspire new artistic conversations while connecting local environments with international perspectives.

Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Sara Marlowe Hall has exhibited internationally in London, Shanghai, Portugal, Leipzig, San Francisco, Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles. Together with Matthew Zuk, she has developed a collaborative practice that uses travel, encounter and place as catalysts for artistic exploration.

The opening of Lovers Talk represented an important milestone for the Sculpture Garden’s developing residency programme, reinforcing its role as a space for experimentation, collaboration and contemporary artistic practice in Cornwall.
